Students can be penalized for a variety of attendance-related issues. You can define these penalty reasons in **Institution Config / Courses / Attendance Penalties**.

## Configuring a New Attendance Penalty

To add a new penalty, click **New Attendance Penalty** to open the setup modal. Fill out the following fields:

- **Penalty Code** – A short code to identify the penalty (e.g., LE for Left Early).
- **Penalty Reason** – A brief explanation of the penalty.
- **Penalty Type** – Choose whether the penalty is measured in **Minutes** or **Percentage**.
- **Default Penalty Minutes / %** – If you selected **Minutes**, enter the number of minutes to deduct. If you selected **Percentage**, this field will change to **Default Penalty %**.

Click **Add** to save the attendance penalty. You can override the default value when assigning the penalty to a student in a course.
